Robert Shaw, 63, and his girlfriend Sherri Bourgeois-Williams, 58, live together in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut, United States. They recently committed a crime caught on camera.
According to Shaw, he has a son who is Puerto Rican. J. Martin Landscaping owner Jose Martin of East Hartford, Capitol Planning Region, Connecticut is also Puerto Rican.
“I have not been myself at all and definitely not a racist,” Shaw told WTNH. “My son is Puerto Rican, like I’m not a racist and I’m scared to death to even be here.”
At around 10:30 a.m. on October 8, 2023, Martin and his brother Leo Martin started working on Frisbie Street in Middletown, which is near Shaw and Bourgeois-Wiliams’ residence. A customer hired Jose to do a job there, which involved mowing, cleaning up leaves and trimming bushes and trees.
Shortly before 4:00 p.m., Shaw and Bourgeois-Williams confronted Jose and Leo. The couple complained about the noise and ended up harassing the Puerto Rican brothers, who stayed calm throughout the ordeal.
Jose used his phone to record what Shaw and Bourgeois-Williams’ rants. At one point, Shaw tried to pretend he was hit by Jose.
“This is why we need a border wall right here,” Shaw said as he walked toward Martin. “This is why we need a border wall. Get these clowns out of here.”
Bourgeois-Williams repeatedly asked Leo if he had a visa. She even asked him if he entered the U.S. legally.
On October 12, 2023, Shaw and Bourgeois-Williams were arrested. They were each charged by the Middletown Police Department with disorderly conduct.
