James Andrew Chang, 35, graduated cum laude from the University of Houston in Houston, Texas, United States in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in biology. From the same university, he earned his master’s degree in mathematics in 2013 and his PhD in mathematics in 2014.
From 2007 to 2011, Chang was a teaching assistant at the university. From 2014 to 2015, he was a graduate teaching fellow at the university.
In August 2018, the university hired Chang as a lecturer of mathematics. In October 2022, he became the assistant director of graduate studies in the university’s mathematics department.
While employed by the university, Chang allegedly possessed videos showing a child performing sex acts. In July 2023, the Houston Police Department started investigating him and later found evidence that he did possess digital images of young girls and boys under 18 engaging in sexual acts.
On October 10, 2023, Chang was arrested on the University of Houston campus by the Crimes Against Children Task Force of the Houston Police Department. He was charged with five counts of possession of child pornography.
On October 11, 2023, Chang appeared in probable cause court where a judge set his bond at $500,000. The University of Houston suspended his employment as a lecturer after his arrest.
