Aniyah Womack of Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida, United States has died. She was 19.
On May 23, 2023, Womack and Mariah Jynnae Clayton, 20, of Florida were with several friends at an apartment in Regency, Jacksonville. In the evening, Womack filmed TikTok videos that included a scene with Clayton coming out of the shower holding an all-black rifle.
A man in the apartment said while Clayton held the rifle, he tried to check the safety. Before he actually touched the weapon, according to him, it discharged and hit Womack in the stomach.
Another witness claimed the rifle discharged when Clayton began putting it down. Clayton claimed that a man put his arms around her and grabbed it, which was proven false, according to police officers.
Another man said he drove to the apartment to buy weed that evening. When he arrived, he said, the people in the apartment told him Womack had shot herself so he and Clayton took Womack to Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville.
At around 12:30 a.m. on May 24, 2023, officers responded to the hospital and found Womack suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. She died hours after undergoing surgery.
Clayton told the officers she and the man picked up Womack off a sidewalk. However, officers determined Clayton’s negligence had caused Womack to be shot.
On October 5, 2023, a warrant was issued for Clayton’s arrest. On October 6, 2023, she was arrested and jailed in Jacksonville.
Bond for Clayton was set at $250,000. She was charged with manslaughter.
