Edward George “Ed” Madec, 52, of Fresno, Fresno County, California, United States worked at Fresno City College in Fresno as a professor. Aside from Fresno, he has lived in other parts of California including Camarillo, Clovis, Morgan Hill, Rohnert Park, Weed and Visalia.

Aside from teaching, Madec also served as the men’s basketball coach of Fresno County College before the program was found in violation of multiple by-laws. In 2020, the team was placed on probation for four year and he was placed on administrative leave.

On September 9, 2020, Madec filed a writ of mandate case against the California Community College Athletic Association in the jurisdiction of Fresno County. This was after Fresno City College removed him as the men’s basketball coach.

In the summer of 2022, Madec joined Buchanan High School in Clovis, Fresno County as the boys’ basketball coach. After eight games, he resigned.

At around 2:00 p.m. on August 15, 2023, he was teaching a class at Fresno County College when he allegedly said he would shoot the school’s students and officials, including Dr. Carole Goldsmith.

Shortly after, Madec was placed on administrative leave. Authorities began an investigation and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

In 2004, Goldsmith graduated from the University of California, Davis in Davis, Yolo County, California with a PhD in educational leadership and administration. She became president of West Hills College Coalinga in Coalinga, Fresno County in January 2013, the Fresno City College president in August 2016 and the State Center Community College District chancellor in January 2022.

At around 2:00 p.m. on October 13, 2023, Madec was arrested in Merced County. He was unarmed.

Madec was booked into the Fresno County Jail in Fresno. He was released after posting bail.
