As a United States Navy sailor, Cameron Bradley Hoffman was assigned to a squadron at Naval Air Station North Island on San Diego Bay in San Diego, California, USA. His roommate in the barracks grew suspicious of him after he said something about a child.
While in the barracks, Hoffman allegedly told his roommate that he liked a child, liked hanging out in the child’s room and liked hanging out with the child at the park. While Hoffman was asleep on September 15, 2023, this roommate accessed his cellphone and found child sexual abuse photos and videos in the device.
On September 22, 2023, the roommate sent a tip to the Multiple Threat Alert Center of the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. On September 27, 2023, NCIS agents interviewed the roommate to get more details about the photos and videos.
When NCIS agents interviewed Hoffman on October 12, 2023, he waived his rights and agreed to speak with them. He told the agents he has viewed and downloaded child pornography since middle school.
One of the manners Hoffman obtained the captioned child pornography was by Telegram, he told the NCIS agents. He said he paid someone on the social media messaging application in exchange for the child sexual abuse materials and the child pornography that he downloaded was maintained on his cellphone.
A search warrant for Hoffman’s cellphone was issued. Investigators looked through thousands of photos and videos on the device and found photos and videos depicting child sexual abuse materials.
After the interview with the NCIS agents, Hoffman was arrested. He was charged with attempted receipt of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct and possession of images of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.
