Grace Rosa Baez, 37, is no longer a police officer in New York City, New York, United States. She lived in an apartment in the Yonkers, Westchester County, New York with Cesar Martinez, 43.
In 2012, Baez became a New York City Police Department officer. In 2020, the department placed her on modified duty and started investigating her following accusations of misconduct.
From October 9, 2023 through October 18, 2023, Baez and Martinez allegedly had numerous conversations with an individual they believed to be a drug trafficker. The individual was actually a confidential source working with law enforcement about wholesale narcotics trafficking.
On October 16, 2023, Baez met the source in Yonkers near the apartment she shared with Martinez. She allegedly handed the source a plastic candy container with the sample of fentanyl, which was later tested and confirmed to contain fentanyl.
While on duty as an NYPD officer, Baez had conversations with the source, which were recorded. She reportedly offered to sell heroin and cocaine to the source.
On October 19, 2023, Baez and Martinez were arrested. They were each charged with conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and heroin and narcotics distribution.
As Baez was arrested, law enforcement officers approached her apartment in the Bronx and saw a package of suspected narcotics being thrown outside. They discovered inside the apartment a kilogram press machine and more suspected narcotics that Martinez had apparently tried to throw outside.
According to Federal Bureau of Investigation assistant director in charge James Smith, Baez and Martinez are accused of taking part in a conspiracy to distribute dangerous narcotics on the streets of New York City. On October 20, 2023, the two suspects were presented before U.S. Magistrate Judge James L. Cott.
