John Root Fitzpatrick of Morongo Valley, San Bernardino County, California, United States has died. He was 52.
Fitzpatrick was a U.S. Navy Sea, Air, and Land (SEAL) Teams veteran. In 2010, he was honorably discharged.
While residing at the Roadrunner Mobile Home Park in Morongo Valley, Fitzpatrick met Fang “Yama” Jin, 47, of China on social media, according to CBS8. On July 14, 2023, she left China and flew to Los Angeles, California.
On July 15, 2023, Jin met Fitzpatrick in Palm Springs. On July 16, 2023, the were seen on surveillance video buying toiletries inside the Marine Corps Exchange at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, San Bernardino County.
While staying at Fitzpatrick’s mobile home in Morongo Valley, Jin continued to send photos and videos to her family in China. The last video she sent was recorded on Adobe Road in Twentynine Palms on the evening of July 22, 2023.
On July 26, 2023, Jin was reported missing by her relatives to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. On July 22, 2023, Fitzpatrick was reported missing by a friend to the department.
On August 1, 2023, investigators from the department served a search warrant on Fitzpatrick’s mobile home in Morongo Valley. They seized a straw hat, suitcases belonging to Jin and her white purse with her belongings inside and smelled the odor of decomposition inside the mobile home.
On August 3, 2023, the investigators served a second search warrant at the mobile home and seized three iPhone cell phones. On September 17, 2023, Fitzpatrick’s truck and his remains were found in the Harper Flats area of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in Borrego Springs, San Diego County, California.
On October 28, 2023, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department search and rescue team found Fin’s remains in the general area of the Harper Canyon trailhead at the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Due to an ongoing investigation, Fitzpatrick’s and Fin’s autopsies remain sealed.
