Parents should neither buy WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches nor feed them to toddlers and young children, according to an advisory released by the United States Food and Drug Administration on October 28, 2023. This product containing elevated levels of lead have been recalled.
WanaBana agreed to voluntarily recall all of its apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches regardless of expiration. The makes its products using soursop, also known as guanabana, planted in Esmeraldas, Ecuador.
Recently, health officials in North Carolina, USA started investigating four children with elevated blood lead levels. As part of the investigation, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services analyzed multiple lots of the WanaBana pouches and detected extremely high concentrations of lead.
Short term exposure to lead could result in headache, vomiting, anemia and abdominal pain or colic. Longer term exposure could cause constipation, fatigue, irritability, lethargy, tremor, weight loss, occasional abdominal discomfort, muscle aches or muscle prickling and muscular exhaustibility of difficulty concentrating.
If a child or a toddler has consumed WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree pouches, his or her parents or caregivers should contact their healthcare provider about getting a blood test, the FDA advised. Through Amazon, Dollar Tree, Sam’s Club and other retailers, the pouches were sold across the U.S.
