Diego Barajas Medina of Carbondale, Garfield County, Colorado, United States has died. He was 20.
In 2021, Medina graduated from high school. He lived in Carbondale with his mother and his brother.
Medina planned to work for a year after his high school graduation before attending Colorado Mountain College, which has several locations in Colorado. He had no known criminal history.
On the morning of October 28, 2023, Medina apparently entered Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park in Glenwood Springs, Garfield County, Colorado while it was closed. There were no employees and visitors there at the time.
Wearing body armor and tactical clothing, Medina had patches and emblems on his clothing that gave him the appearance of being associated with law enforcement. He was armed with an AR-style rifle, a semi-automatic handgun and explosives.
Before the park opened to the public that morning, a maintenance crew found Medina dead on the floor of a women’s bathroom at the park. The Carbondale resident had a self-inflected gunshot wound to the head.
Aside from the AR-style rifle, there were also a handgun, explosive devices and a duty belt holding several ammunition magazines near Medina’s body. Some of the explosive devices were real while some were fake.
The words “I am not a killer, I just want to get into the caves” were written on a wall of the bathroom. Authorities have yet to confirm whether or not the message was written by Medina.
On October 29, 2023, Medina’s body was removed. The weapons found on him were ghost guns.
