Margaret “Maggie” Mbitu of Whitman, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States has died. She was 31.
Mbitu worked as a per diem nurse at Brockton Area Multi Services (BAMSI) in Halifax, Plymouth County. For more than seven years, she worked in the nonprofit’s group homes and helped people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
At around 11:00 p.m. on October 30, 2023, Mbitu left work in Halifax in her white 2013 Toyota Venza. That was the last time she was seen alive.
On the morning of October 31, 2023, Mbitu’s boyfriend Kevin Kinyanjui Kangethe, 40, of Lowell, Middlesex County, Massachusetts bought plane tickets to Kenya. Surveillance video captured him driving into the Central Parking lot of General Edward Lawrence Logan International Airport in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, entering the terminal area and then checking into a flight bound for Kenya.
At around 6:30 p.m. on November 1, 2023, Massachusetts State Police troopers found Mbitu dead in the passenger seat of her 2013 Toyota Venza in the Central Parking lot of Logan Airport. She had massive slash wounds to her face and neck and other puncture wounds to her sides.
On November 2, 2023, a warrant was issued for the arrest of Kangethe. He was charged with Mbitu’s murder.
The Massachusetts State Police is working with Kenyan authorities to find Kangethe. The U.S. has an extradition treaty with Kenya and the Federation Bureau of Investigation has an international operations office in Nairobi, Kenya.
