Originally from Amman, Jordan, Ruba Almaghtheh, 34, crashed her car into a building in Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana, United States used by the Israelite School of Universal and Practical Knowledge at around 11:30 p.m. on November 3, 2023. She thought it was a Jewish school.
The ISUPK is part of the Black Hebrew Israelite movement, which believes that black Americans are descendants of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. It is a hate group because of its extremist ideology and black supremacist rhetoric, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which is based in Montgomery, Alabama, USA.
When Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers arrested Almaghtheh, she told one of the officers that she had been watching the news and she “couldn’t breathe anymore”. She said she passed by several times and saw the ISUPK building in Indianapolis, which she referred to an “Israel school”.
“Yes,” Almaghtheh said when asked if she rammed her car into the building. “I did it on purpose.”
During the crash, there were people inside the building but nobody was hurt. Almaghtheh charged with criminal recklessness.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation to look into the incident further so Almaghtheh may face additional charges. On November 8, 2023, she will make her first court appearance.
