“Ma’am Chief” reminds us Karylle is Carlos Padilla Jr. and Robin Padilla‘s granddaughter. Not that we forgot.
But for those who forgot, Carlos and Robin are first cousins. The latter reigned as one of the kings of action films in the Philippines before he became the number-one senator in the country.
From 1958 to 1998, Carlos also pursued a career as an actor. On October 1, 1975, he served as the referee of “Thrilla in Manila“, the boxing match between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City, Metro Manila, Philippines.
Karylle’s mother Zsa Zsa Padilla is the fourth among the six children of Carlos and Esperanza Perez. Karylle’s father Dr. Modesto Tatlonghari is a dentist.
Karylle plays a policewoman named Olga Tentativa in “Ma’am Chief”, which hits Philippine theaters on November 15, 2023. I cannot give more details about the character without giving spoilers so let us just leave it there.
What I can share is that when Karylle gave life to this character, she kicked asses literally and figuratively. With confidence. With conviction. With control.
SPOILER ALERT: Kudos to the fight director, of course. But no matter how good the fight director is, if the actor doesn’t have IT, no amount of editing and background music could mask that. Karylle has IT, which is proven by “Ma’am Chief”.
We know Karylle as the quirky but sensible host of “It’s Showtime“. We know her as Sang’gre Alena in “Encantadia“. We know her as one of the best in the Philippines when it comes to live performances as a singer and as a theater actor. But what she will show in “Ma’am Chief” is something you most likely have not seen her do. Clue? Again. It will remind us that she is a Padilla.
Sofia Hazel Calayag wrote the screenplay of “Ma’am Chief” based on a story by PULP Studios chief operating officer Happee Sy Go. The story revolves around a policewoman on a secret mission to South Korea, disguising herself as a tour guide to apprehend a fugitive.
This is the debut film of PULP Studios. It marks the directorial debut of Kring Kim.
