Dajohn Cortez Ramon Yarborough, 32, and Brian Pierre Swearegene, 35, are residents of Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The latter previously lived in Chicago, Illinois, USA.
In 2009, Swearegene was convicted of first-degree burglary. In 2013, he was convicted of first-degree aggravated robbery.
On the evening of April 2, 2022, home security footage captured Yarborough and Swearegene on camera as they approached an apartment building in Minneapolis. They were both carrying guns.
Shortly before 10:00 p.m., Yarborough shot Darrell Lamont Sims II of Brooklyn Park, Hennepin County multiple times outside the building. After the shooting, Yarborough and Swearegene fled the scene.
Sims was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis where he was pronounced dead. He was 28.
In July 2022, Swearegene was charged with making felony threats of violence in Ramsey County, Minnesota from an incident not related to Sims’ murder. On July 20, 2022, a warrant for Swearegene’s arrest was issued, charging him in Hennepin County with second-degree murder with intent and possession of a firearm in connection with Sims’ murder.
On September 21, 2022, members of the Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force and the U.S. Marshals North Star Fugitive Task Force arrested Swearegene in Superior, Douglas County, Wisconsin, USA without incident. On April 11, 2023, he pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting second-degree murder.
On October 17, 2023, Yarborough pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. He was represented by Bruce Rivers.
On November 20, 2023, Yarborough was sentenced to 40 years in prison and ordered by District Judge Paul Scoggin to pay $8,500 in restitution from his prison wages. Swearegene will be sentenced on December 18, 2023.
