Dagestan, Russia’s Magomed Magomedkerimov crowned 2023 PFL Welterweight Champion in Washington, DC

Fighting out of Makhachkala, Dagestan, Russia, Magomed Magomedkerimov (Магомед Магомедкеримов), 33, is currently in Washington, D.C., United States. He has just earned his 16th Professional Fighters League victory and is now $1 million richer.

Born in Agvali, Dagestan, Magomedkerimov made his professional mixed martial arts debut on August 22, 2008 in Viseu, Portugal. On July 5, 2018, he made his PFL debut.

On August 23, 2023, Magomedkerimov fought “The Black Dragon” Solomon Renfro, 26, of Cleveland, Ohio, USA in the semifinal round of the 2023 PFL Welterweight Tournament in New York City, New York, USA. The Dagestani MMA fighter won via unanimous decision.

2023 PFL World Championship

The PFL held the world championship of its 2023 season at The Anthem in in Southwest Waterfront, Washington, D.C. on November 24, 2023. The event inaugurated the partnership between the league and DUDE Wipes, which will continue in 2024.

There were 11 matches on the card including six title bouts. The main card had seven bouts and the preliminary card had four bouts.

One of the title bouts was the 2023 PFL Welterweight Championship match between Magomedkerimov and Sadibou Sy, 36, of Stockholm, Sweden. The latter, who is of Senegalese descent, was the 2022 PFL Welterweight Champion.

Magomed Magomedkerimov vs Sadibou Sy

Jerin Valel served as the referee of the title bout between Magomedkerimov and Sy at the 2023 PFL World Championship. The referee stopped the fight after 1 minute and 17 seconds in the third round after Dagestani MMA fighter submitted his Senegalese-Swedish opponent via guillotine choke.

The loss downgraded Sy’s professional MMA record to 16 wins and 7 losses. He made his professional MMA debut on October 19, 2013 and his PFL debut on July 5, 2018.

On the other hand, Magomedkerimov now has 34 wins and 6 losses. He only has 1 loss in the PFL since he joined the promotion.

A total of six countries were represented at the 2023 PFL World Championship, namely Brazil, Canada, Peru, Russia, Sweden and the U.S. Sy solely represented Sweden while Magomedkerimov was one of the three fighters from Russia.
