Derek Michael Chauvin, 47, is in the hospital. He is one of the four police officers involved in the fatal arrest of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States on May 25, 2020.
On May 29, 2020, Chauvin was arrested and detained at Ramsey County Jail in Saint Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota. On May 31, 2020, he was transferred to the Hennepin County Jail in Minneapolis then to the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Oak Park Heights, Washington County, Minnesota.
In April 2021, Chauvin was convicted of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. He was sentenced to 22 years and six months in prison.
On December 15, 2021, Chauvin pleaded guilty to violating Floyd’s civil rights and was sentenced to 21 years in prison. In August 2022, he was transferred from the Minnesota Correctional Facility to the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Pima County, Arizona, USA to simultaneously serve his two sentences.
At around 12:30 p.m. on November 24, 2023, Chauvin was stabbed 22 times at the FCI Tucson by by another inmate named John Turscak, 52. The former police officer was seriously injured in the stabbing.
Employees at the prison broke up the assault, performed life-saving measures on Chauvin and transported him to the hospital for life-saving care. The Bureau of Prisons confirmed an assault took place there but did not name the victim.
On November 25, 2023, the office of Minnesota attorney general Keith Ellison was notified of the assault. He was told Chauvin is in stable condition.
Turscak is serving a 30-year sentence for crimes committed while working as an Federal Bureau of Investigation informant. He is a former Mexican Mafia member.
