Headquartered in Washington, D.C., United States, the Federal Bureau of Investigation recently worked with the Guardia Civil of Spain and the Policia Federal of Brazil. The collaboration resulted in the successful arrest of brothers Thauann Padilha Palomanes, 37, and Thaylan Padilha Palomanes, 31, of São Paulo, Brazil.
On June 28, 2014, Millad Mille Hosseini Ballaai of Iran was murdered allegedly by Thauann and Thaylan. The victim was 35.
In exchange for accommodation, Thauann and Thaylan worked in the kitchen of Ballaai’s inn in Morro do Vidigal, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Days before Ballaai’s murder, the Brazilian brothers were fired from the inn.
After the murder, Thauann and Thaylan hid in Portugal and Spain, respectively. On March 9, 2018, the Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras of Portugal arrested Thaylan in Braga, Portugal.
Thaylan was extradited to Brazil. On October 22, 2022, he flew from Guarulhos, São Paulo to Porto, Portugal. From Porto, he moved to the Netherlands before joining Thauann in Estepona, Costa del Sol, Spain.
On June 11, 2023, a Brazilian citizen allegedly planning to join the Islamic State was arrested at São Paulo/Guarulhos–Governor André Franco Montoro International Airport in Guarulhos. The arrestee, whose name was not released, allegedly has links to Thauann and Thaylan.
In cooperation with Israel’s Mossad spy agency, the Policia Federal of Brazil arrested two people on November 8, 2023 to foil an attack allegedly planned by the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, which was seeking to establish itself in Brazil. The names of the arrestees were not released.
On November 27, 2023, the FBI and the Policia Federal helped the Guardia Civil arrest Thauann and Thaylan in Estepona for activities related to terrorism. The Brazilian brothers are accused of being radicalized and spreading IS propaganda over the internet.
