On November 9, 2023, Paul Ryan Overeem, 29, of Orlando, Orange County, Florida, USA was in a group chat on Instagram where he allegedly threatened to shoot people during a public Cybertruck delivery on November 30, 2023. On November 10, 2023, Tesla was notified about the threats.
“I plan on killing people,” Overeem allegedly wrote in one of his messages in the group chat. He also allegedly wrote, “I would like you to do something about it so I don’t have to. I wanna die.”
On November 30, 2023, Overeem drove a 2015 black Chevrolet Tahoe from Florida to Austin to potentially carry out a mass casualty event at Gigafactory Texas. Upon arriving in Travis County, he was arrested and booked into the Travis County Jail in Austin.
On the same day, Musk hosted a Cybertruck delivery event at Gigafactory Texas. It was announced that the cheapest rear-wheel drive model, with a price starting at $60,990 before applying discounts, will be available in 2025.
Bail for Overeem was set at $300,000. He was charged with terroristic threat, a third-degree felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
