Chunliam Saechao, 40, of Pleasant Hill, Contra Costa County, California, United States is a former police detective in Pittsburg, Contra Costa County. He is accused of shooting his wife.
Saechao is not only a former Pittsburgh Police Department detective. He is also a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.
On December 7, 2023, Saechao allegedly shot his wife as she tried to enter their residence in Pleasant Hill through a barricaded garage door. She suffered injuries and has been released from the hospital.
After the shooting, Saechao barricaded in his residence in Pleasant Hill. As efforts to take custody of him continued overnight, he used a rifle and a shotgun to fire several shots.
On the early morning of December 8, 2023, Saechao posted messages on social media indicating he might be suicidal. He had been on Twitter with posts leaning into far-right conspiracies throughout the standoff.
During the standoff, police officers tried to negotiate with Saechao with telephone and loudspeaker. None of the officers was injured.
At around 5:00 a.m. on December 9, 2023, Saechao opened fire at armored police vehicles outside his residence. At around 7:50 a.m., he willingly exited his residence and surrendered to a special weapons and tactics (SWAT) team of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Saechao is being held at the Pleasant Hill Police Department. He faces charges of attempted homicide and assault with a dead weapon and will be transferred to the Contra Costa County Jail in Martinez, Contra Costa County.
