Lizbeth Medina of Edna, Jackson County, Texas, United States has died. She was 16.
Born and raised in Grand Island, Hall County, Nebraska, USA, Medina was Jacqueline Medina‘s only child and Refugio Medina and Yesenia Medina’s granddaughter. Lizbeth attended Walnut Middle School in Grand Island then in 2022, she and her mother moved from Grand Island to an apartment at Cottonwood Apartments in Edna.
In August 2022, Lizbeth entered Edna High School, which is a part of the Edna Independent School District. She joined the cheerleading team of the school.
On December 5, 2023, Lizbeth was supposed to perform at a Christmas parade in Edna with the Edna High School cheerleading team. When she failed to show up, Jacqueline went home to look for her.
Jacqueline found Lizbeth unresponsive in the bathtub. There was no forced entry into the apartment.
At around 7:00 p.m., Edna Police Department officers were called to the apartment. Paramedics arrived and pronounced Lizbeth dead.
On December 8, 2023, the Edna Police Department released images of Rafael Govea Romero, 23, and a silver Ford Taurus that could be related to Lizbeth’s murder. He was wearing a black Volcom hoodie in the photo and was described as a person of interest.
Romero is undocumented. Whether or not he and Lizbeth knew each other has yet to be confirmed.
On December 9, 2013, detectives with the Edna Police Department and the Texas Rangers arrested Romero in Schulenburg, Fayette County, Texas. He was booked into the Jackson County Jail in Edna and charged with capital murder.
