David Griffin, 48, of Mulberry, Polk County, Florida, United States is no longer a police officer in Haines City, Polk County. He and his girlfriend Shelbi Dubose, 28, of Mulberry are accused of stealing from Walmart using the self-checkout.
In 2019, Griffin joined the Haines City Police Department. He and Dubose were recently booked into the Polk County Jail in Bartow, Polk County.
On December 9, 2023, Griffin and Dubose went to a Walmart store in Mulberry. Written on her shirt were the words, “Dear Santa, I can explain.”
A store employee noticed that Griffin was putting things in bags without scanning them. When the employee confronted him, the then Haines City Police Department officer and Dubose tried to leave.
Security team members stopped Griffin and Dubose. The allegedly two scanned and paid for $207 worth of product but neither scanned nor paid for $343 worth.
Store employees checked their records of Griffin’s debit card usage, pulled video of those transactions and found four other similar thefts by him on October 15, 2023, on October 29, 2023, on November 10, 2023 and on November 26, 2023. Dubose was there for three of them.
After Griffin was arrested on December 9, 2023, he resigned from his position as a Haines City Police Department officer. He was charged with five counts of retail petit theft.
Dubose was also arrested. She was charged with four counts of retail petit theft.
