Matthew Joseph Grant, 22, is majoring in mechanical engineering at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, Monroe County, New York, United States. He is a captain on the school’s wrestling team.
Grant is originally from Onaway, Presque Isle County, Michigan, USA. While attending RIT, he shares an off-house campus in Henrietta, Monroe County with roommates.
Born in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, Grant is one of the two adopted children of Mark Grant and Nancy Grant. Matthew is the older brother of Maggie Grant.
Matthew is 5’8″ tall and his registered weight is 149 pounds. In 2020, he graduated fourth in his Onaway High School class. He was the school’s National Honors Society president.
Recently, Matthew broke up with his girlfriend. In October 2023, Mark, Nancy and Maggie went to RIT to visit Matthew.
On November 16, 2023, Matthew and Maggie talked on the phone about wrestling and a video production project she was doing. On November 19, 2023, he called his parents and told them his wallet had been stolen.
At around 10:00 p.m. on November 20, 2023, Matthew was seen driving a 2014 gray Jeep Cherokee with a Michigan license plate. The E-ZPass in the vehicle was recorded near Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York, USA. He left his phone at his apartment in Henrietta.
Just before midnight, Matthew was recorded by surveillance cameras alone inside the convenience store of Live’s gas station in Tyre, Seneca County, New York. Later that day, Mark received a message from one of Matthew’s roommates in Henrietta, saying Matthew left to meet someone but did not come home.
Mark told the roommate to report Matthew missing. A girl Matthew had gone on one or two dates with told the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office that they had not made any plans to meet.
On December 12, 2023, Matthew’s 2014 gray Jeep Cherokee was found in a parking lot used by hikers on the Appalachian Trail in the Delaware Water Gap in Pennsylvania, USA. He had been hiking the trail while his family was looking for him.
At around 4:00 p.m. on December 13, 2023, Matthew walked into the police station in Palmerton, Carbon County, Pennsylvania, USA to make a phone call to contact his family. He told police officers that there may be a missing-person report for him and people may have been looking for him.
In the evening, Nancy picked up Matthew at the police station in Palmerton. On December 14, 2023, he released a statement saying in part, “I want to say a huge thank you to everyone that helped in the search process.”
“I feel incredibly grateful to have people like you all in my corner,” Matthew continued. “It’s hard to understand just how much support you will have, regardless of how you are doing personally. I am doing much better now that I am reunited with my family.”
Matthew has yet to give details about his whereabouts between November 21, 2023 and December 12, 2023. Why he did not contact his family and his roommates during those days and how he did not know he was reported missing are still unclear.
