Brent Wood, 33, of Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio, United States was outside Kesher Israel in Georgetown, Northwest D.C., Washington, D.C., United States on the morning of December 17, 2023. He allegedly shouted an anti-Semitic phrase and sprayed an unknown substance at two victims.
“Gas the Jews!” Wood allegedly yelled. The two people he sprayed an unknown substance at were not physically hurt.
At around 9:26 a.m., Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia officers responded to the area and arrested Wood. The department is investigating the offense as being motivated by hate or bias.
No hazardous materials were found when Wood’s vehicle was swept. He was charged with resisting arrest and simple assault.
Founded in 1911, Kesher Israel is a Modern Orthodox synagogue. Its worshipers have included authors, diplomats, journalists, jurists and politicians.
Kenneth R. Weinstein, 62, is a member of the synagogue. From April 2011 to January 2021, he was the president and chief executive officer of Hudson Institute in Washington, D.C.
Jack Lew, 68, has attended the synagogue. On November 5, 2023, he assumed office as the U.S. ambassador to Israel.
