Nizamettin Gürsu of Turkey has been arrested. He was the boyfriend of the late Yesim Demir.
On July 7, 2023, Demir fell off a cliff in Bozcaada, Çanakkale, Turkey. She survived the 104-foot fall but died 45 minutes after medics tried life-saving efforts. She was 39.
Demir’s body was taken to Çanakkale Adli Tıp Kurumu while Gürsu was taken to the Gendarmerie General Command. He was released pending trial and was prohibited from traveling.
According to Gürsu, he and Demir went to Polente Cape in Bozcaada on July 6, 2023 to watch the sunset. He claimed that he proposed to her there and she accepted her marriage proposal.
When Gürsu went to his car to get a basket of food, according to him, he heard Demir scream. He claimed that he rushed back to where he left her and saw her at the bottom of the cliff.
However, authorities found signs of violent struggle at the scene inclding a broken music speaker and shattered glasses. They also found that the ring Gürsu claimed to have given Demir was still in its box inside his pocket.
Demir’s family told authorities that she had been planning to break up with Gürsu. She suffered from panic attacks so it would be very unlikely for her to willingly go to the edge of a cliff, according to her family.
The chief public prosecutor’s office of Ezine, Çanakkale investigated Demir’s death. Five months after her death, Gürsu was arrested in Sakarya, Turkey, BirGün reported. He is accused of deliberately murdering her.
