The Barton Creek Square Mall in Austin, Travis County, Texas, United States was the meeting place of Vincent Gutierrez, 19, and three other males in the afternoon of December 16, 2023. The four males, two in each group, met there to to complete a private party sale of merchandise being sold on a social media platform.
Prior to the encounter, the four males did not know each other. The names of the three other males were not released.
When the two pairs met, a physical fight ensued which escalated into the shooting. Immediately after the shooting, Gutierrez and his companion fled the scene.
At around 4:45 p.m., Austin Police Department officers arrived on scene. One of the two males Gutierrez met was shot and taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Two other individuals were evaluated for minor injuries related to evacuating. They both refused emergency medical services transport.
It was an isolated incident, according to the Austin Police Department. Nevertheless, officers are now patrolling the area more frequently than before the shooting.
On December 21, 2023, Austin Police Department detectives arrested Gutierrez. He was booked into the Travis County Jail in Austin.
It has yet to be confirmed whether or not Gutierrez is an Austin resident. He was charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
