The Nation of Brunei, the Abode of Peace is a country in Southeast Asia. Also known as Brunei Darussalam, the country is the only sovereign state entirely on Borneo.
On January 1, 1984, Brunei achieved its independence from the United Kingdom. On September 22, 1984, Brunei was admitted to the United Nations.
Hassanal Bolkiah, 77, is the incumbent and 29th Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of Brunei. He assumed office on February 23, 1997.
