The Republic of Palau is an island country in Oceania. The country shares maritime boundaries with international waters to the north, the Philippines to the northwest, Micronesia to the east and Indonesia to the south.
Since July 18, 1947, the United States has administered the United Nations Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, which includes Palau, the Northern Mariana Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia and the Marshall Islands. Palau became a republic on January 1, 1981 and a sovereign state on October 1, 1994.
Palau was admitted to the United Nations on December 15, 1994. The country’s incumbent and 10th president Surangel Whipps, Jr., 55, assumed office on January 21, 2021.
