Dylan Butler of Perry, Dallas County, Iowa, United States has died. He was 17.
Butler was a Perry High School student. On the morning of January 4, 2024, he took to TikTok to share a video showing a photo of himself in a bathroom stall at the school with a blue duffle bag at his feet.
“now we wait,” Butler wrote in the caption of the video, which was overlayed with the rock group KMFDM song “Stray Bullet”. The video is no longer available as all of his social media accounts have been deleted.
That morning, Butler was armed with a pump-action shotgun and a small-caliber handgun. There are still no details about where he got those firearms and how he entered the school with them.
It was the first day back in class after winter break. Some students arrived early for a breakfast program.
At around 7:37 a.m., before the opening bell, Butler allegedly opened fire inside the school. A sixth-grade student was fatally shot.
The school’s principal Dan Marburger, 58, and four students were injured. After the shooting, Butler fatally shot himself.
At around 7:44 a.m., an officer arrived at the scene and found the gunshot victims. Ambulance took the victims to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa and another hospital in Des Moines.
Police found an improvised explosive device in the school and disposed of it. Authorities believe Butler acted alone. His motive is being investigated.
