Anela Jean-Louis, 37, of Miramar, Broward County, Florida, United States has nine children. The oldest one is Maykala Jean Louis, 21.
Seven of Anela’s children are minors. They were born in 2013, in 2014, in 2017, in 2019, in 2020, in 2021 and in 2022.
On the morning of January 8, 2024, the Miramar Police Department received a call from an individual who saw two of Anela’s children in diapers running around outside their residence in Miramar. One child’s hand was bleeding and the other one was covered in feces.
When police officers arrived at the residence, they found Makayla and Anela’s eighth child asleep inside. All of Anela’s children lived there except one, who is an adult and currently in jail.
The officers smelled strong pungent odor of feces and urine inside the residence, which was in deplorable conditions. There was no food in the refrigerator and no furniture in the residence and when they asked Makayla about it, she screamed and became hostile.
One of Anela’s sons had an extreme case of eczema. When asked about the open wound on his leg, he said he was hit by a broom.
All of Anela’s seven minor children were removed from her custody. The three youngest ones had injuries so they were sent to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, Broward County.
On January 8, 2023, officers tried to speak to Anela when she arrived at the hospital but she became irate and fought them so the arrested her. She was charged with seven counts of child neglect, seven counts of aggravated child abuse and seven counts of contributing to the delinquency of a child and resisting arrest.
Before Anela’s arrest, she already has two open cases with the Florida Department of Children and Families. She had 20 cases with the department.
On January 9, 2024, a judge held a shelter hearing and ruled that Anela’s seven minor children will remain in the custody of the state and in foster care. The defense’s request to let Makayla take care of her minor siblings was rejected.
