Abdul Mateen ibni Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah was born in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei to Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei and Puan Mariam binti Abdul Aziz. Commonly known as Prince Abdul Mateen, the prince is the 10th among the sultan’s 12 children.

Mateen’s complete Malay name is Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Muda Abdul Mateen and. His mother is half Bruneian, a quarter Japanese and a quarter English while his father is pure Bruneian.

Mateen is a certified Professional Association of Diving Instructors diver. He used to play for the Bruneian football team AM Gunners and he represented Brunei in polo in the Southeast Asian Games in 2017 and 2019.

Aside from scuba diving, football, polo and horseback riding, Mateen also loves badminton, golf, bungee jumping, rowing, skiing, skydiving, snorkeling, swimming, boxing, Muay Thai and mixed martial arts. He plays the guitar, as well.

A resident of Istana Nurul Izzah, Jerudong, Brunei-Muara District, Brunei, Mateen owns white tiger cubs and ocelots and loves going to the beach with them. Here are 13 more things about him:

  2. On May 9, 2010, he started his commissioning course for regular army officers along with 200 other recruits in the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Sandhurst, Berkshire, England, United Kingdom.
  3. On April 15, 2011, he graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst as a second lieutenant.
  4. In July 2014, he graduated from King’s College London in London with a bachelor’s degree in international politics.
  5. In 2015, he attended the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Malta where he delivered a speech about terrorism.
  6. In July 2016, he graduated from the School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London in London with a master’s degree in international diplomacy. On August 31, 2016, a ceremony was held for his promotion to the rank of acting captain in the Brunei armed forces, which came into effect on May 9, 2017.
  7. In March 2018, he was awarded the Royal Air Force (RAF) badge, which qualified him as a helicopter pilot, in Defence Helicopter Flying School at the RAF station in Shawbury, Shropshire, West Midlands, England. On October 19, 2018, he and his father attended the 12th Asia–Europe Meeting in Brussels, Belgium.
  8. On June 30, 2019, his father gave his permission to grant him honorary membership in the Special Forces Regiment.
  9. On May 20, 2021, he was promoted to the rank of major. From September 20, 2021 to December 2, 2021, he underwent The All Arms Commando Course at the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines in Devon, England and received the Green Beret.
  10. On September 23, 2022, he competed the basic parachute training.
  11. From March 13-14, 2023, he participated in a comprehensive tour of the Naval Special Warfare commands in Coronado, California, United States.
  12. On August 10, 2023, he turned 32. In October 2023, she and Anisha Isa Kalebic got engaged.
  13. On January 14, 2024, he and Kalebic got married.
