Matthew Scheffer, 38, and his wife Sarah Scheffer, 37, are residents of Jefferson City, Missouri, United States. They have two sons together.
In June 2018, Matthew joined Performance Foodservice in Missouri as an area manager. In April 2022, he joined US Foods in Jefferson City as a territory manager.
Aside from working part-time as a design and art teacher at Calvary Lutheran High School in Jefferson City, Sarah also had a photography business. While married to Matthew, she had a relationship with someone in Pakistan.
Sarah is accused of planning to poison Matthew. While planning for his murder, she allegedly searched online for flights to Pakistan.
On January 1, 2024, Matthew confronted Sarah after she gave him a drink that had a bitter taste. She first said she urinated in his drink and put an industrial strength adhesive in it then later denied adding anything to it.
Because of this, Matthew installed a camera facing the kitchen. The camera caught Sarah putting lily of the valley into a smoothie she allegedly intended to give him.
Lily of the valley is native to North America. It is highly poisonous because of the high concentration of cardiac glycosides, a class of organic compounds that increase the output force of the heart and decrease its rate of contractions.
On January 16, 2024, Matthew called the Jefferson County Police Department. That day, Sarah was arrested and booked into the Cole County Jail in Jefferson City.
When interviewed by officers, Sarah said she did add lily of the valley to a smoothie with the intent to cause Matthew harm. She was charged with attempted murder.
