On May 16, 2023, Poague and 32 others graduated from Southwest Georgia Academy in Damascus, Early County, Georgia. She was one of the 28 honor graduates.

After graduating from Southwest Georgia Academy, Poague entered Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus, Sumter County, Georgia. In August 2023, she and 21 other freshmen at the university were named to the President Jimmy Carter Leadership Program.

Almost three months after the Miss National Peanut Festival 2023 coronation ceremony, Poague is accused of killing Jaxton Drew “JD” Williams, who was born in June 2022. She is the girlfriend of the boy’s father Julian “Ja” Williams.

JD was unresponsive when he was admitted to the emergency room at Phoebe Sumter Hospital in Americus. Life-saving measures were performed on him but he later died.

On JD’s birth certificate, his name is Romeo Angles. It was his father who changed his name.

At around 2:00 p.m. on January 14, 2024, the police department of Georgia Southwestern State University asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to investigate the boy’s death. GBI agents arrested Poague after an examination of the evidence and multiple interviews.

Poague was booked into the Sumter County Jail in Americus without bond. She was charged with murder, aggravated battery and first-degree cruelty to children.
