Kevin Kinyanjui Kangethe, 40, of Lowell, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States has been arrested.
On November 1, 2023, Kangethe’s girlfriend Margaret “Maggie” Mbitu of Whitman, Plymouth County, Massachusetts was found dead. She was 31.
Originally from Kenya, Mbitu worked as a per diem nurse at Brockton Area Multi Services (BAMSI) in Halifax, Plymouth County. She spent more than seven years working in the nonprofit’s group homes and helping people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
At around 11:00 p.m. on October 30, 2023, Mbitu left work in Halifax in her white 2013 Toyota Venza. She was later fatally stabbed allegedly by Kangethe.
On the morning of October 31, 2023, Kangethe bought plane tickets to Kenya. At around 6:30 p.m. on November 1, 2023, Massachusetts State Police troopers found Mbitu dead in the passenger seat of her 2013 Toyota Venza in the Central Parking lot of General Edward Lawrence Logan International Airport in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.
On November 2, 2023, a warrant was issued for Kangethe’s arrest. He was charged with murder.
On the evening of January 29, 2024, Kangethe was arrested in Kenya by Kenyan police, who worked with the U.S. State Department, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office and Massachusetts State Police. He is expected to be extradited to the U.S. soon.
