Lifei “Ada” Huang of El Monte, Los Angeles County, California, United States has died. She was 22.
Huang was an experienced hiker and a college student. She was a member of the First Chinese Baptist Church in Walnut, Los Angeles.
At around 2:00 p.m. on February 4, 2024, Huang went out on a hike alone on Mount Baldy in the San Gabriel Mountains on the border of Los Angeles County and San Bernardino County, California. The summit, which is 10,064 feet high, is one of the deadliest peaks in the U.S.
That was the last time Huang was seen alive. She went missing amid the winter storm.
At around 3:25 p.m. on February 10, 2024, the U.S. Forestry Department informed the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department that a citizen flying a drone may have spotted Huang at San Antonio Creek Falls in the San Gabriel Mountains. However, high winds made it difficult for aviation crews to perform an aerial search.
Deputies and search and rescue team members responded to the area but the conditions on the mountain prevented them from hiking to the spot where Huang was believed to be. They stayed the night near the location to preserve the scene.
At around 7:45 a.m. on February 11, 2024, medics were hoisted down to the location where they found Huang dead. Her body and the medics were airlifted off the mountain.
