Portland, Oregon’s Moses Jacob Lopez to spend 22 years in Oregon Department of Corrections 

Moses Jacob Lopez, 29, of Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon, United States will be incarcerated in the Oregon Department of Corrections in Salem, Marion County, Oregon for 22 years.

Lopez, who is 5’9″tall and weighs 180 pounds, worked as a certified nursing assistant at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in North Portland, Portland. On April 3, 2023, the Portland resident threatened two employees at a supermarket in Coos County, Oregon and was arrested for disorderly conduct, trespassing and weapons charges.

On April 6, 2023, Lopez failed to appear in court. On the evening of April 9, 2023, the nursing assistant went out partying in Portland.

Later that night, Lopez called 911 and asked for a ride home. It was Radio City cab driver Reese McDowell Lawhon, 43, who picked up Lopez for a cab ride that evening.

At around 7:00 p.m., using a pair of brass knuckles with an attached blade, Lopez fatally stabbed Lawhon in the neck. It was unprovoked.

At 12:56 a.m. on April 10, 2023, Lopez was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center in Portland. Originally, the killer was charged with second-degree murder.

In a plea agreement, Lopez pled guilty to first-degree manslaughter and unlawful use of a weapon. On February 21, 2024, Multnomah County district attorney Mike Schmidt announced that Circuit Judge Heidi Moawad sentenced Lopez to 22 years in prison in exchange for the guilty pleas.
