Luke Slabber of Cape Town, South Africa, Charlie Clark of Las Vegas, Nevada, United States and Carson Muir of Birmingham, Alabama, USA have died. They were 21, 19 and 18, respectively.
Slabber, Clark and Muir were students of the University of Wyoming in Laramie, Albany County, Wyoming, USA. They were members of the university’s swim team.
Clark, a sophomore studying psychology major, participated in distance freestyle and the individual medley. Slabber, a junior studying construction management, participated primarily in sprint freestyle, breaststroke and individual medley.
Muir was a freshman. She was studying animal and veterinary sciences.
At around 2:45 p.m. on February 22, 2024, Slabber, Clark, Muir and two other members of the University of Wyoming’s men’s swimming and diving team were inside a Toyota RAV4. The vehicle went off the left shoulder of a southbound lane at the intersection of U.S. Highway 287 and Red Mountain Road between Livermore, Larimer County, Colorado and Virginia Dale, Larimer County.
The Toyota RAV4 repeatedly rolled and ejected two of the five University of Wyoming students. Slabber, Clark and Muir died in the crash while the two other students suffered non-life-threatening injuries and survived.
One of the two survivors was driving the car. Authorities have yet to release the names of the two survivors, who have been released from the hospital.
