Ivette Diaz, 49, and her boyfriend have been living together in Miami, Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States since 2021. At around 5:20 p.m. on February 20, 2024, he made tea and a tortilla meal while they were both inside their residence.

The boyfriend stepped out for a phone call related to work while Diaz remained inside. When he went back inside, they both ate the tortilla.

When Diaz complained that the tortilla was too spicy, her boyfriend offered her his tea but she adamantly declined it. He then drank the tea, his throat started to burn and he smelled bleach from the tea, which he immediately poured into the sink.

“There’s bleach in this drink,” Diaz’s boyfriend told her. “Did you put bleach in my drink?”

According to Diaz, she thought the bleach tablet was sugar. But according to police, the location of the sugar and bleach in the kitchen suggests that she intentionally put the bleach tablet into her boyfriend’s tea.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews took Diaz’s boyfriend to Homestead Hospital in Homestead, Miami-Dade County for treatment. On February 23, 2024, she was booked into the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami.

Diaz faces a charge of poisoning food or water, which is a first-degree felony. She invoked her right to an attorney.

On February 24, 2024, Diaz was ordered held without bond. At 9:15 a.m. on March 15, 2024, she will be arraigned.
