Qinxuan Pan is a Chinese-American man based in Cambridge, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. He is an accomplished pianist.

  3. In 2013, he graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge with a bachelor’s degree in computer science. 
  4. In August 2014, he reentered the MIT as a graduate student. He was an artificial-intelligence researcher in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) of the MIT and part of the MIT team working on a project called Omniscope.
  5. He and Constantinos Daskalakis co-authored “A Counter-Example to Karlin’s Strong Conjecture for Fictitious Play” and “Square Hellinger Subadditivity for Bayesian Networks and its Applications to Identity Testing,” which were published in December 2014 and in December 2016, respectively.
  6. On October 12, 2015, he was at the White Mountains of New Hampshire, USA for the Danny Lewin Retreat.
  7. On March 4, 2020, he encountered MIT student Zion Perry at the Lindy Hop Society Bread and Bones Birthday Jam celebration at the Morss Hall of MIT. Perry graduated from the MIT in 2020 and got engaged to Yale University student Kevin Jiang on January 30, 2021.
  8. On February 5, 2021, he stole a sports utility vehicle from a dealership in Mansfield, Massachusetts before driving to Connecticut, USA. 
  9. At 8:33 p.m. on February 6, 2021, he fatally shot Jiang near Perry’s apartment in New Haven, Connecticut. Soon after the murder, North Haven Police Department officers encountered him while he was in a dark SUV stuck on railroad tracks in the parking lot of Sim’s Metals, a junkyard in North Haven, New Haven County, Connecticut. The car was towed and the police dropped him off at a Best Western hotel. He had fled from the hotel by the time the car was reported stolen.
  10. On February 11, 2021, he was seen driving with family in the Duluth or Brookhaven areas of Georgia, USA.
  11. On March 1, 2021, the U.S. Marshals Service began a nationwide hunt for him, offering $10,000 for information leading to his arrest.
  12. On May 14, 2021, he was arrested in Alabama, USA.
  13. He was 32 years old when he pleaded guilty on February 29, 2024 in Superior Court in New Haven to Jiang’s murder. On April 25, 2024, he will attend his disposition hearing.

  1. Are you sure that he was a Chinese American? I have seen elsewhere that he was a Chinese citizen on a green card.

    1. He must be a American citizen to be on the team USA Mathematical Olympiad.
      He probably was born in USA, and raised as a child in China. It is common for rich Chinese family.

      1. Thanks for your reply. Some time after I posted the comment above, the fact that Qinxuan was an American citizen was confirmed by the INTERPOL notice. However, the notice also says that the man was born in Shanghai. Moreover, the trend of birth-tourism which you are referring to mainly happened during 2005-2015. It had not begun in 1991, the year in which Qinxuan was born.
