Aside from Bowdoin, Joey has lived in other parts of Maine including Waldoboro, Lisbon Falls, Sabattus, Lewiston, Durham and Auburn. He previously lived in Wichita, Kansas, USA.

Between 2013 and 2022, Joey was charged in Knox, Maine with 15 different crimes including felonies that bar people from possessing guns under state and federal law. He was convicted of aggravated assault, simple assault and several probation violations.
From 2021 to 2023, Joey served two years for aggravated assault at the Maine Correctional Center in Windham, Cumberland County, Maine. On April 18, 2023, he fatally shot his parents, their family friends Robert Eger and Patti Eger inside Robert and Patti’s house in Bowdoin then randomly shot Sean Halsey, Justin Halsey and Paige Halsey.

On April 18, 2023, he fatally shot his parents, Robert and Patti inside Robert and Patti’s house in Bowdoin then randomly shot Sean, Justin and Paige in the area of I-295 in Yarmouth, Cumberland County. He was booked into Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset, Lincoln County, Maine and charged with four counts of murder.
- On June 9, 2023, a grand jury in Cumberland County filed 11 charges against him including attempted murder. On June 16, 2023, he was indicted on theft charges, accusing him of stealing one gun from his mother and eight guns from his father.
- On July 28, 2023, he pleaded not guilty, not criminally responsible to 27 charges.
- On December 27, 2023, he withdrew his plea of not criminally responsible by reason of insanity, specifically related to the murder charges.
- In February 2024, he turned 35.
