Jean Carlos Aponte, 40, and his wife Sara Ashley Gama, 38, have two children together. In 2018, they moved to a house in Jacaranda Lakes, Plantation, Broward County, Florida, United States.
Aponte is a U.S. Army veteran. In 2021, Gama gave birth to their son Ethan Aponte.
Recently, Jean reached out to Catch A Lift Fund for help to address his mental health. Also recently, Gama gave birth to their second child.
On March 25, 2024, Jean went for a walk with Ethan. It was recorded by a neighbor’s Ring camera.
On March 26, 2024, Plantation Police Department officers went to Jean and Gama’s residence in Jacaranda Lakes for a welfare check and found her and Ethan dead. Both the boy and his mother died by traumatic means, according to detectives.
The officers also found Jean unresponsive from an apparent self-induced drug overdose. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Jean and Gama’s newborn baby was not harmed. The baby is now with family members.
On March 31, 2024, the Plantation Police Department confirmed that Jean was arrested. He was booked into the Broward County Jail in Fort Lauderdale, Broward County and charged with two counts of first-degree premeditated murder.
When Jean appeared in court, he was denied bond. He was ordered to get a mental health screening.
