Da’Mya Cummerlander of Columbus, Ohio, United States has died. She was 18.
Who is Kenneth Hairston?
On the evening of June 1, 2024, Cummerlander was with Kenneth Hairston, 20, of Columbus and four other people. They were hanging out in a house in the 2600 block of Woodsedge Avenue in Columbus.
According to Hairston, he, Cummerlander and the four other people were drinking and smoking weed in a room while playing with firearms. He said someone smacked away the gun he was holding so it accidentally fired and hit Cummerlander.
At 12:35 a.m. on June 2, 2024, the Columbus Police Department received a report of a shooting at the residence. Hairston and the four other people Cummerlander was with fled before police officers arrived at the scene.
The officers who responded found Cummerlander suffering from a gunshot wound. At 12:44 a.m., she was pronounced dead.
On June 3, 2024, Hairston went to the Columbus Police Department’s headquarters for an interview with detectives. He was accompanied by an attorney and charged with involuntary manslaughter and weapons under disability.
Hairston was booked into the Franklin County Jail in Columbus. He will be arraigned on June 5, 2024.
