Tran is of Vietnamese descent. He joined the New York City Police Department in February 2021 and he became the department’s deputy commissioner of public information in December 2023.

At around 11:15 p.m. on May 17, 2024, Tran allegedly pulled up his white sport utility vehicle beside a yellow truck at an intersection in Voorhees Township, Camden County, New Jersey, USA. He allegedly shot a man, 30, of Voorhees Township in the driver seat of his yellow truck at least three times.

After being shot, the victim was involved in a multivehicle crash at Route 73 and Cooper Road in Voorhees Township. One of the vehicles involved was driven by a woman.

The Voorhees Township man was taken to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, Camden County in critical condition. The NYPD did not release his name.

After Tran fled the scene in his SUV, he used his credit card to buy gas at a gas station in Mount Laurel, Burlington County, New Jersey. Detectives traced the vehicle to that station.

On June 6, 2024, detectives obtained a warrant for Tran’s gun issued by the NYPD. Ballistics tied the gun to the three bullet casings recovered at the crime scene.

That day, Tran was arrested at the NYPD. On June 7, 2024, he appeared in court in Manhattan, New York City where he agreed to extradition to New Jersey.

According to the NYPD, Tran was suspended without pay. Represented by Gregory G. Smith, the NYPD cop was charged with aggravated assault and weapons possession for an unlawful purpose.
