Shelby Ann Stotts, 48, of Covington, Hill County, Texas, United States was arrested while she was employed by the Cleburne Independent School District in Cleburne, Johnson County, Texas. She was a Cleburne High School staffer.
Who is Shelby Stotts?
Aside from Covington, Stotts has lived in other parts of Texas including Alvarado and Blum.
On November 18, 2001, Stotts gave birth to a baby girl. Hours later, a man picking up cans along the roadway while walking to a store found the baby off of Briaroaks Road between Alvarado, Johnson County and Burleson, Texas.
The man called 911. Johnson County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to Briaroaks Road and found the baby loosely wrapped in a Winnie the Pooh jacket.
Stotts is accused of leaving her newborn baby on the side of the road, failing to seek prompt medical care after giving birth and failing to clamp the baby’s umbilical cord, causing the baby to bleed to death. It was then Johnson County sheriff Bob Alford who named the girl Angel Baby Doe.
In June 2021, Johnson County sheriff Adam King enlisted the help of the Texas attorney general’s cold case unit to help investigate new leads. In September 2023, deoxyribonucleic acid samples were taken from Stotts and Angel Baby Doe.
Johnson County detectives submitted the samples to Othram in The Woodlands, Texas for advanced DNA testing. In September 2023, it was confirmed that Stotts is the biological mother of Angel Baby Doe.
Subsequently, Stotts admitted to having abandoned Angel Baby Doe. The baby’s father was also identified but not charged because he was not aware of the pregnancy or birth of the child.
On July 1, 2024, Stotts was arrested. On July 2, 2024, Cleburne ISD confirmed that she was no longer employed by the district.
Bond for Stotts was set at $100,000. She was booked into the Johnson County Jail in Cleburne and is facing several charges including second-degree manslaughter.
