  • On April 29, 2021, he was driving a white Dodge Journey when he pulled up and spoke Spanish as he approached Alyssa, then a West Pensacola Elementary School student. She did not know him and told the incident to her mother Amber.
  • At 7:02 a.m. on May 18, 2021, he sent a message to his supervisor saying he would be late. Minutes later, he was caught on camera exiting a white Dodge Journey carrying a knife while running toward Alyssa, who was playing with homemade slime with blue dye while waiting for her bus at the corner of Old Corry Field Road and Perdido Street in Pensacola. He grabbed her by the neck but she fought back and left blue dye on his arms. He ran back to his car, stopped at a Murphy Express gas station at around 7:08 a.m. and went to work at 7:45 a.m. When Escambia County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested him in the evening, there was still blue dye on his arms. He was charged with attempted kidnapping, aggravated assault and battery.

His defense attorney Robert Dees said Alyssa failed to select him definitively in a photo lineup and she initially described him as Hispanic while he is Caucasian. Smith set his bond a $1 million bond for the attempted kidnapping charge, $500,000 on the aggravated assault charge and $5,000 on the battery charge.
