Serena Lee was born and raised in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She earned her law degree from the University of Leeds in Leeds, England, United Kingdom.
On August 27, 2023, Lee competed against five other Miss Universe Malaysia 2023 candidates in a private event at MOV Hotel in Jalan Berangan, Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur and won the title. Caroline Green and Temara Nelia Inigo were the respective first and second runners-up.

On September 6, 2024, Lee will crown her successor at The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur, Autograph Collection in Kuala Lumpur. It is the 57th edition of the national beauty pageant that selects Malaysia’s Miss Universe candidate.

Malaysia currently has one Miss Universe placement. The country has been competing in the international beauty pageant since 1964.
On July 11, 1970, Josephine Lena Wong Jaw Leng represented Malaysia at Miss Universe 1970 and competed against 62 other candidates at the Miami Beach Auditorium in Miami Beach, Florida, United States. She finished in the Top 15.
In 2020, Eleen Yong founded a modeling agency called Elpis Models Management. On June 21, 2024, she became the new Miss Universe Malaysia national director.
