Yaoundé, Cameroon native Joel Embiid, 30, has been playing for the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association since 2014. The team is based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States.

In March 2021, Embiid donated his NBA All-Star Game winnings worth $100,000 to fight homelessness in Philadelphia. In April 2021, he received the NBA Cares Community Assist Award.

Philadelphia 76ers’ Joel Embiid

On June 20, 2014, the Philadelphia 76ers selected Embiid with the third overall pick during the 2014 NBA draft. On August 26, 2014, he signed his rookie scale contract with the team.

On October 26, 2016, Embiid made his regular NBA season debut. On October 10, 2017, he signed a five-year designated rookie scale maximum contract extension with the Philadelphia 76ers worth $148 million.

In July 2022, Embiid became a citizen of France and in September 2022, he became a U.S. citizen. During the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, from July 27, 2024 to August 11, 2024, he was the only Philadelphia 76ers player in the U.S. men’s national basketball team, which won gold.

On the morning of September 20, 2024, the Philadelphia 76ers announced a multi-year contract extension it signed with Embiid. The contract, which is worth $192.9 million, will guarantee the Cameroonian basketball star $299.5 through the 2028-2029 NBA season.

For the 2026-2027 NBA season, Embiid will decline his $59 million player option. In the final year of the new three-year extension, he will earn $69 million.
