KJ Apa, 27, is set to play the late Sublime vocalist and guitarist Bradley Nowell in a movie. The Kiwi actor and singer born in Auckland, New Zealand played Archie Andrews in “Riverdale” from 2017 to 2023.

Formed in 1988, Sublime is a band from Long Beach, California, United States. Its original members were Nowell, bassist Eric Wilson and drummer Bud Gaugh.

Born in Long Beach, Nowell died in San Francisco, California, USA on May 25, 1996. He was 28.

Sublime biopic feature

Francis Lawrence was supposed to direct the upcoming Sublime film starring Apa as Nowell. But due to scheduling conflict, Lawrence was replaced by Justin Chon.

Instead, Lawrence will executive produce the film along with Wilson, Gaugh, Troy Dendekker Nowell and Jakob Nowell. Jakob is Bradley and Troy’s son.

Chon and Bobby Hundreds are working on the screenplay. Chris Mundy wrote an initial draft.

Marisa Paiva oversees the movie for 3000 Pictures while David Ready, Jenno Topping and Peter Chernin are producing for Chenin Entertainment, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Overseeing for Chernin Entertainment is its director of development Jamie Spetner.

‘One Fast Move’

Apa is represented by Jackoway Austen, Mandy Jacobsen, Luber Roklin Entertainment, Red 11 Management and UTA. The most recent film Apa starred in is “One Fast Move“, which was released in the U.S. on August 8, 2024.

Written and directed by Kelly Blatz, the movie was distributed by Amazon MGM Studios. It is about a young man seeking out his estranged father to pursue his dream of becoming a professional motorcycle racer.

The movie was filmed in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. It was produced by Mike Karz and Bill Bindley.

Among Apa’s co-stars are Eric Dane, Maia Reficco, Edward James Olmost, Austin North, Jackson Hurst, Libby Blake, Kevin Saunders, Robin K. Johnson, Jessica Luza, Ronny Mathew, Rose Bianco, Ellis Hobbs IV and Adam Thomas Ziemba. Also in the cast are Greg White, Jason Weigandt and Greg Creamer as race announcers.
