Born in Greece, Panos Anastasiou, 76, of Anchorage, Alaska, United States is a Vietnam War veteran who previously lived in Texas, USA and Washington, USA. He is divorced and has been diagnosed with throat cancer.
In 1990, Anastasiou tried to buy real estate with $195,000 in cash that he carried with him, which drew the attention of law enforcement. Registered as a nonpartisan voter, he donated a total of $800 through ActBlue since 2016.
Why was Panos Anastasiou arrested?
Between March 10, 2023 and July 16, 2024, Anastasiou sent more than 465 messages to the U.S. Supreme Court via a public website maintained by the court. He continued sending messages even after being contacted by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents.
On January 4, 2024, Anastasiou’s messages escalated to violent, racist and homophobic messages intending to threaten harm toward six U.S. Supreme Court justices. They were coupled with threats of assassination by firearms, hanging and torture.
On September 18, 2024, a grand jury in Alaska indicted Anastasiou. On September 19, 2024, he was arrested at his residence in Spenard, Anchorage.
After being arrested, Anastasiou made his initial court appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Kyle F. Reardon of the U.S. District Court for the District of Alaska. The Anchorage man pleaded not guilty to all the charges filed against him.
After a detention hearing on September 20, 2024, Anastasiou was released on bond. Represented by his federal public defender Jane Imholte, he was charged with 13 counts of making threats in interstate commerce and nine counts of making threats against a federal judge.
