What crimes did John Kosolcharoen commit?

From 1990 to 1994, Kosolcharoen attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison in Madison, Wisconsin where he earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration. In 2016, he created two companies called Liveyon and Genetech to manufacture and distribute injectable stem cell products made from human umbilical cord blood.

Liveyon was based in Irvine and Genetech was based in San Diego, California. Liveyon products were marketed under different brand names including ReGen, which Kosolcharoen and others misrepresented as suitable for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, lung and heart diseases, autoimmune disorders and other conditions.

Between 2017 and 2018, Liveyon products generated around $21.6 million in revenue. In 2018, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention received reports of patients requiring hospitalization for bacterial infections after receiving the products. Until about April 2019, the products were marketed throughout the U.S. using advertising materials with false and misleading statements about their purported safety and effectiveness.

In July 2024, Kosolcharoen turned 53. On August 27, 2204, he pleaded guilty in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California to introducing an unapproved new drug into interstate commerce with the intent to defraud and mislead. On September 30, 2024, he was sentenced to three years in prison.

On December 3, 2024, Kosolcharoen will attend a restitution hearing. He is currently in federal custody on an unrelated conviction.
