Why was Mel J. Horne arrested?
Mel J. Horne, 44, of Washington, D.C., United States has been arrested. He was recently went to the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center (CVC) at the U.S. Capitol Complex in Washington, D.C. to attend the viewing of 39th U.S. president Jimmy Carter‘s casket.
Carter passed way in Plains, Georgia, USA on December 29, 2024. He was 100.
On the afternoon of January 8, 2025, Horne tried to enter the CVC to view Carter’s casket. Just after 2:00 p.m., U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) officers spotted a machete in his bag going through the x-ray machine.
The officers stopped the machine, searched the bag and found not just a machete but also three knives in the bag. They arrested Horne for multiple charges of carrying a dangerous weapon.
While the viewing of Carter’s casket was not affected, security screening at the entrance was delayed for about one hour. The USCP has yet to determine a motive for Horne’s actions.
