Caleb Rijos of the Bronx, New York City, New York, United States has died. He was 14.

Rijos was a student of the Bronx Leadership Academy High School, which was near his residence in the Bronx. He is Jacob Rijos‘s son.

On the morning of January 10, 2025, Caleb left home. At 9:25 a.m., while he was on his way to school, he was stabbed twice in the chest in front of 300 East 138th Street in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the Bronx allegedly by Waldo Mejia, 29, of Mott Haven.

Caleb’s heart and lungs were pierced. Within six minutes of the stabbing, emergency responders transported him to Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx where he was pronounced dead.

At around midnight on January 11, 2025, Mejia came back home at 270 Alexander Avenue in Mott Haven carrying a bloody knife. He was arrested near his home by New York City Police Department officers who were waiting for him.

Mejia was charged with second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was arrested four times before he was accused of fatally stabbing Caleb.

Mejia has a documented history of mental health interaction with the NYPD. He is considered a career criminal.

In January 2015, police officers found Mejia with a gravity knife. In May 2017, he was found with a 9-millimeter pistol loaded with nine round and was arrested on criminal possession of weapons charges.

Shortly after 2:30 a.m on April 6, 2019, Mejia set a fire inside the entrance of an apartment building on Bailey Avenue in Kingsbridge in the Bronx where his former girlfriend was residing. While wearing a mask, he doused the outer lobby with flammable liquid and lit it up.

On April 9, 2019, NYPD officers arrested Mejia on Kingsbridge Avenue in the Bronx. He was charged with burglary and arson.

On November 27, 2024, Mejia stabbed a neighbor’s doorbell camera and was arrested. On November 28, 2024, he was released on his own recognizance.

On January 5, 2025, Mejia allegedly stabbed a man, 38, in the Third Avenue and East 138th Street subway station in Mott Haven. The suspect allegedly slashed the victim in the left arm while the latter was standing on the steps.

On January 21, 2025, Mejia will appear in court for the crime he committed on November 27, 2024. Charges could also be coming for his alleged crime on January 5, 2025.
